The Village was incorporated in 1886 and became a home-rule municipality by ways of a referendum held on November 5, 1996. The Village serves an area of approximately four square miles located in Manhattan Township in Will County, Illinois, approximately 9 miles southwest of the City of Joliet. Manhattan is accessible from three major interstate highways. We are 7 miles from I-80, 11 miles from I-57, 12 miles from I-55, and 12 miles from I-355. According to a 2006 special census, the Village has a population of 6,071 and estimated that it annually adds 900 new residents.

Manhattan was incorporated in 1886. We are an old and established community. Having its roots in farming, the village has grown over the last ten years to accommodate over 6000 people. Our forebears of German and Irish heritage give expression in our early spring festival Irish Fest.
