Northwest suburban Cook County, along with the rest of the northwest suburbs, has had tremendous economic and population growth over the past three decades. Wheeling is also home to over 470 commercial and retail establishments, bringing the total of licensed businesses in the Village to approximately 850. Wheeling's unemployment rate has historically been lower than the Chicago PMSA and the State of Illinois rates as shown by Illinois Department of Employment Securities statistics, every year for the past decade. Employment growth continues to be the rule in the Wheeling marketplace.
