Incorporated in 1875, the Village of Riverside is a historically significant community located approximately 12 miles from the Chicago loop. Riverside is recognized as one of America’s first planned suburban communities. It is the creation of renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and is one of the nation’s earliest and best examples of rail-oriented development.

Today, Riverside benefits from a professional government, whereby, the Village President and Board of Trustees are chosen by residents to pass laws, ordinances, and resolutions that govern conduct in the community, establish the annual budget, and appoint a Village Manager to direct and oversee the administrative functions of the municipal government.
